The United Nations Medal of Honor for Civil Courage was given to Markus in 2005.
Markus competed in the 2000 (Syndey), 2004 (Athens), 2008 (Beijing) and 2012 (London) Olympic Games.
Markus was the director of sport psychology for the Brazilian Olympic Team at their home Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, 2016. The team won the most medals in the history of their country.
Meditation and the ever-present challenge to become aware of the present moment is an integral part of Markus' life and work. He spent three years in the department of psychology at UCLA researching the impact of mindfulness on performance. Today, Markus teaches mindfulness workshops at Stanford University and across the world.
